Why Hire an Architect?

Whether you’re building a custom home, enlarging a kitchen, or doubling the size of your house, hiring an architect can be a sound investment. Many people ask, “If I know what I want, why do I need an architect?” Or, “Why should I pay two people, can’t my builder just handle it?”

While it’s important to weigh the impact hiring an architect will have on your budget, over the long term doing so can actually save you money. Here’s how.

The Role of an Architect in Vero Beach

Architects are trained to see the big picture. Few people fully understand how complex a building project is. Design options, contractors, zoning laws, and building codes are the major pieces of the puzzle but there are many smaller pieces that must also fall neatly into place for a project to succeed.

As no two projects are exactly alike, an architect’s training, experience, and vision can guide you through the entire design and construction process. They’re masters at turning design aspirations into square feet and three-dimensional space, and they do it in a way that makes your project cost-effective:
  • As your design ideas evolve, they make changes “on paper,” not during construction.
  • Architects stay abreast of the latest advances in materials, technologies, and building methods.
  • Detailed drawings make it easier for your contractor to accurately budget and build your project.

Finally, good design sells. If you plan to one day sell your home, a well-designed home generally has a higher resale value.

A Collaborative Process

The best architects know how important it is to work with your builder. In fact, many architects today also offer construction services or work closely with specific construction firms. They know designing and building or remodeling a home is a collaborative affair between the homeowner, builder, and architect.

Partnering with an experienced architect means your project gets another crucial advocate, one who’s empowered to champion the unique design challenges your project presents. When all is said and done, you end up with a well-designed space that meets your needs while also working within your budget and schedule.

I appreciate it when you mentioned that a detailed drawing done by an architect can make it easier for the builder to build it. My uncle just bought a piece of land where he is planning to custom made his dream house that he has been wanting to own. I will advise him to hire a reliable architect to translate his dream house into a drawing so it can be easier for the contractor to build it.

It got me when you said that architects will see the bigger picture regarding how complex a project could be. My husband and I should probably hire one if we actually wanted to incorporate greener options with the two-story house we wanted. It will be constructed next year once we find contractors we can trust, so this article helped us and convinced us to actually include those kinds of professionals in the process for our peace of mind.

My wife and I decided we'd like to build our own house next year, so we're looking for the right team to get the project started. We're glad you described how architects should work closely with builders, so we'll keep that in mind when we interview construction specialists next week. We're grateful for your insight on finding an architect who knows how to work in teams.
